49ers quarterback Brock Purdy undergoes elbow surgery

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy underwent surgery on an injured elbow on Friday, which should allow him to return to action, possibly early next season.

Members of the 49ers said that Dr. Keith Meister had repaired the internal corset of Purdy’s right elbow. The team stated that Purdy is expected to start the throwing development program in three months.

The typical full return period is six months, which will be the start of the 2023 regular season.

Purdy was originally scheduled to have surgery on February 22, but Meister delayed it because his right elbow was too swollen. Meister met with Purdy again last week and approved the operation.

Purdy tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during the first 31-7 loss in the NFC title game against Philadelphia on January 29.

Purdy went from last draft pick to starter in the conference title game in an impressive rookie season for the 49ers. He won his first seven starts before losing to Philadelphia in the conference title game.

Purdy’s injury will give 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance time to work on the first-team offense. Lance started last season as a starter but suffered an ankle injury at the end of the season in his second week.

Lance needed a second operation at the end of December and started to quit late last month.

San Francisco is also likely to be looking for a veteran quarterback to join the group when free agency begins next week.
