41st Annual Austin Music Awards Honor Austin Chronicle Poll Winners

On Sunday, the Mohawk Bar hosted the 41st annual Austin Chronicle Austin Music Awards.

“Something like a musical prom in Austin,” said Rachel Rasko, music editor for the Austin Chronicle.

The event celebrates the winners of the annual Austin Music Poll. There are 51 categories in total, with five nominees each. It is also a way for the industry to come together.

“Before, the Austin music scene was very small and it was very easy to tell what was the biggest album of the year because you had to have a record company to release your record. Now everyone can release their music over the Internet, so there’s still a lot of music to consider,” Ruscoe said. “The essence of the celebration, and it’s kind of an encyclopedia of the year and what happened, has stayed the same, but we’ve made an effort to include a lot more genres and just different people in the survey each year.”

There are both music and industry awards. The live sound engineer is just one example.

“I just started working in the studio, but I happened to be in live sound. I have been a volunteer in [SXSW]and I popped into a Macklemore show and they thought I knew what I was doing and I ended up going and saving the place after that and doing live sound all the time ever since.” – Amanda Justice, who won Best Live Sound Engineer “. said.

“I’m honored, especially considering that two of the people I’ve been nominated with are one of the reasons I have this,” she said as she accepted her award.

Jamie Bahr, CEO of Girls Rock Austin, is a member of two bands herself.

“The power is just that your voice just booms and the music you write just fills the space and then you see the expression on people’s faces as they kind of melt into your emotional outpouring for them, so it’s a real experience.” she said.

Girls Rock Austin, which empowers girls, transgender and non-binary youth through music education, was nominated for Most Creative Event.

The Austin Music Awards honor the SIMS Foundation, which provides mental health services to musicians.

Whether the nominee wins for the first time or eighth time, as KUTX host Laurie Gallardo, they say it’s about having fun with others in the industry.

“I’m a little shocked and confused, but at the same time very flattered because I have to do something right, and what I can call it work is pretty cool,” she said. “Seeing my peers, seeing my colleagues, seeing my favorite musicians, just having a great time.”

“It’s about music,” Gallardo said as she accepted her award.
