2 more lawsuits filed against NYPD captain accused of violence against employees

A New York Police Department captain who has been sued twice for alleged mistreatment of female police officers has received two new lawsuits after he became the subject of an NBC News investigation into sexual harassment and gender discrimination in big city law enforcement.

Captain Salvatore Marchese is currently charged with sexual harassment or gender discrimination in four cases since 2013. A 2013 case involving an officer who claimed to have forced oral sex on her was settled for $100,000, documents show. In August 2022, he was sued for allegedly harassing a pregnant officer and forcing her to work the night shift.

Two new lawsuits filed on Wednesday against Marchese and the city allege that Marchese scolded female subordinates, including the lieutenant, for being pregnant or having to take care of their children. There was no admission of wrongdoing in the case, which was settled, and Marchese denied wrongdoing in response to all lawsuits.

“It’s really outlandish how they keep letting this man go from team to team, treating people like that,” said former Lt. Ebony Huntley, a plaintiff in one of the two new lawsuits. The single mother, who as a black female lieutenant was a rarity in the NYPD, said she retired early to avoid abuse from Marchese.

Marchese did not respond to requests for comment. The New York City Legal Department, which legally represents the city, and Marchese’s union representative to the Captains Endowment Association also did not respond.
