14m python found dead on New York road

Authorities say a 14-foot python has been found dead on the side of a road in Long Island, likely another exotic pet that has been illegally kept.

A reticulated python – a species known as the world’s longest snake – was discovered on Valentine’s Day on the side of a road in Medford, according to a press release from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

DEC officers responded and found the reptile curled up in a ball and determined it was dead.

“Nothing to see here. Just a normal, run-of-the-mill 14-foot reticulated python on the side of the road,” the State Department of Environmental Protection wrote on Facebook, adding a photo of the reptile.

The police removed the snake from the roadway to properly dispose of it, officials said.

As of Friday, officials were trying to identify the snake’s owner, who apparently kept it as a pet.

It was not immediately clear how the reptile died.

Boas are native to South Asia and feed on everything from birds to deer.

An equally shocking discovery of native reptiles occurred on February 19, when a lethargic, possibly 4-foot, cold-stricken alligator was pulled from Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Lake.

The alligator was treated at the Bronx Zoo, where an autopsy determined it had swallowed a 4-inch wide bath stopper.

Officials said the stray beast was likely an unwanted pet whose owner decided to release it into public waters.
