14-year-old boy attacking autistic boy in Manhattan caught on video

Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy who they say was involved in the brutal hate-motivated beating of a 15-year-old autistic boy in an Upper Manhattan subway station that was filmed and went viral on social media, police said. Wednesday.

Investigators took the teenager into custody late Tuesday evening, charging him with aggravated assault, aggravated stalking and threats.

Police said the boy was one of three teenagers who pulled the boy off the northbound A train at 181st St. near Fort Washington Avenue in Washington Heights around 5:30 p.m. Friday.

A mobile phone video circulating online shows a 15-year-old autistic boy being pulled from the A train and attacked.

Video filmed during the attack shows one teenager handing the victim, wearing sports glasses and a blue hoodie, to a teenage girl who grabs him by the sweatshirt and forces him to walk across a crowded platform.

“Walk!” the girl screams as her frightened victim tries to get back on the train. Passengers watch as she pushes the boy down the platform.

After being pushed off the platform, the teen tries to pull away, but the girl tightens her grip on his hoodie.

“You’re running!” she screams. “Why are you running!”

When the crowd gathers, a few onlookers begin to shout “Watch out!” when the victim, Black, once again tries to break free and jumps back onto the train.

“Go!” the teenage girl screams before punching him in the face.

Why do you want me to leave? the teenager asks meekly, taking a hit from another teenager as he is pulled back to the platform.

As the teen tries to break free again, the teenage girl and two others pounce on him with hayfields and punch him before the video ends.

Participants hold banners during a rally against bullying and racism at W. 181st St. and Ft. Washington Ave. Tuesday, Manhattan.

After the attack, the victim boards the A train to Dyckman St. Station, where the police are informed of the incident.

The teen had bruises on his face and body, and his glasses were broken, according to an NYPD spokesman.

On Tuesday, police said they had identified all three teenagers involved in the attack.

The boy, arrested late Tuesday evening, was the first of three arrested.

According to a police source, he was not charged with a hate crime because he did not say anything derogatory.

His name has not been released due to his age. He is expected to be taken to Manhattan Juvenile Court to face charges, police said.

The teen’s mother told WABC News that her child has autism. It is hard for her to watch the video of her boy being beaten.

“No one wants their child to be abused,” said the mother, who requested anonymity. By the time we got to Tuesday, Mom declined to be interviewed.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force investigated the attack because racial slurs were scattered during the attack. According to police sources, all the attackers appear to be Hispanic.

Rosemary Severino speaks during a rally against bullying and racism at W. 181st St. and Ft. Washington Ave. Tuesday, day.

Outraged by the video, community leaders held an anti-bullying rally outside 181st St.

“I think it is unacceptable to even think that using this insult is normal,” activist Rosemary Severino said at the rally. “The way they sang really broke my heart.”

Those present at the rally described the victim as a “transit child”, fascinated by trains.

“We just enjoy the subway,” said 15-year-old Eduardo Medellin. We find happiness, our safe place in the subway. This is how we are friends. We are a community that loves transit.”

Two other teenagers involved in the attack remained at large on Wednesday, police said.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is strongly encouraged to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be confidential.
