13-year-old New York teenager charged with murdering teen Naiheem Wright after school

On Monday, police said a 13-year-old boy had been charged with the murder of an older Brooklyn teenager during an after-school fight over the girl.

Police said two other boys, aged 14 and 15, both previously arrested for felonies, were also detained in the heinous crime on charges of assault and gang rape.

The three young defendants turned themselves in to police Sunday night in connection with the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old high school student Naiheem Wright, who was killed in front of his twin brother in a Coney Island parking lot on the afternoon of January 1st. 20.

The names of the suspects were not made public by the NYPD due to their age.

The oldest suspect in the past was arrested for assault, grand larceny and illegal possession of a loaded firearm, police said.

Police said the 14-year-old had been arrested for two previous robberies.

The arrests come as the NYPD battles what City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell called a “flawed” juvenile criminal justice system that is being thwarted by the state’s “Raise the Age” law.

The law, signed into law by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, went into effect in October 2019, raising the age of charge for juveniles to 18 from the previous threshold of 16 and 17.

Since then, police statistics show significantly fewer arrests in seven felonies and gun cases involving suspects under the age of 18.

Police said Nayheem’s senseless killing was due to an argument over the girl, and the teen’s mother, Simone Brooks, told The Post that his wounded brother Raheem “stayed with his twin brother the whole time” trying to help him and then watching him. him to die.

“I spoke on the phone with [Raheem] … and when the ambulance arrived, they continued to say: “[Nyheem’s] losing a lot of blood, he’s losing a lot of blood! Brooks said.

Brooks said Nyheem’s wound tore a large artery.

“No one could do anything because the blood just flowed out,” she said.

According to Brooks, the headmaster of Naihim’s school, K728 Liberation Diploma Plus High School, spent the night in the hospital with his family trying to comfort them before he died.

Following the teen’s death, city school chancellor David Banks tweeted: “I spoke to a young man’s principal tonight who described him as a joyful leader.

“He was on the verge of graduation and was a hardworking worker who took an active part in guiding other young people in his school,” Banks wrote of Nychima.

Before the arrests, Brooks told The Post that she wanted the “little punks” who killed her son to pay.

“These days, they all want to pull their guns,” Brooks, 50, said at the time. “They don’t want to fight because they’re just little punks.”

“We want justice for my son Nayhim because he didn’t deserve it and we’re not okay.”
