1 hospitalized after being shot at Coral Gables restaurant; police investigation underway

CORAL GABLES, Florida. (WSVN) — A duty officer was in a restaurant when a gun was inadvertently fired at Coral Gables on Tuesday evening. The police are now investigating what caused the incident.

The shot occurred around 8:45 pm at the Sushi Maki restaurant located at 2334 Ponce De Leon Blvd. before he hit someone, officials said.

On Wednesday morning, the police blocked the surrounding areas, continuing the investigation.

According to police, it is not known if the gun that fired belonged to the officer on duty or someone else, but they can confirm that one person was taken to the hospital.

“We have responded to a report of an accidental gunshot inside Sushi Maki and our officers have responded,” said Sgt. Alex Escobar of the Coral Gables Police Department. “All I can tell you is that there is an officer on duty involved. I don’t know what agency it is at the moment and one of them or someone was taken to the hospital.”

Several people were in the restaurant at the time of the incident.
