1 dead, 1 injured in Volusia County crash, SR-40 reopened to traffic, military says

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida. – One person was killed and another seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision in Volusia County on Thursday afternoon, the military said.

The accident occurred on State Route 40, east of SR-11, around 3:45 p.m. in Pearson, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Soldiers reported that a 30-year-old Crescent City man driving an SUV drove into the east lane of an SR-40 in the path of a sedan. As a result, the SUV flew off the road and rolled over, according to FHP.

The driver of the SUV was airlifted to hospital with an injury, while his passenger, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene, the military said.

The 18-year-old Port Orange man driving the sedan was unharmed and remained at the scene, according to FHP.

Soldiers said the accident blocked both lanes on SR-40, east of SR-11. As of 9:43 p.m., the checkpoint had been cleared, the military later said.
